18TH WORLD CONGRESS OF ACCOUNTANTS 2010

Message from the President of the Malaysian Institute of Accountants

Selamat datang! That is how we bid our visitors welcome in Bahasa Melayu, the official language of Malaysia. It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the 18th World Congress of Accountants (WCOA) which will be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 8 - 11 November 2010.

Being chosen as a host country is a tremendous achievement and honour for the nation as well as the Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA) as it puts us in a unique position to work closely with the government, regulatory agencies, business organisations and the education establishments to raise the profile and status of the accounting profession in the country as well as showcase Malaysia in the eyes of the world.

Apart from that, we are excited about the prospect of disseminating information and insights to the accounting fraternity of the world during the WCOA. Various current issues and challenges will be discussed, presented and debated at the congress for the benefit of the delegates. The injection of new ideas, as well as updates on market developments and industry trends at the congress are certainly things that we look forward to.

As globalisation continues to dictate and affect market trends and despite the new scope of our operating environments, the one thing remains unchanged is public expectation of accountants. Nothing but the highest standards will do. Accountants are responsible for developing and promoting high quality and consistent professional standards. Integrity and ethics are strong fundamentals upon which the accounting profession is built and this is a message that we will continuously promote at the WCOA 2010.

A key element derived from the congress is inspiration - it strives to inspire, and be inspired. It promotes professionalism. It imparts a vision. It strives for excellence. Likewise, we too are inspired and totally dedicated towards presenting a highly professional, educational and cultural meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. See you in the city of Kuala Lumpur in November 2010!
